About Seat

SEAT S.A. is a Spanish automobile manufacturer that sells cars under the SEAT and Cupra brands. The Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI), a Spanish state-owned industrial holding company, was formed it on May 9, 1950. It soon grew to become Spain’s leading automobile provider. The Spanish government sold SEAT to the Volkswagen Group in 1986, following 36 years as an independent manufacturer. SEAT is now a completely owned part of the Volkswagen Group.

The INI, or Instituto Nacional de Industria, a state-owned industrial holding organization, formed SEAT in May 1950. Spain had a small vehicle market in the first half of the twentieth century, especially when compared to other European countries. There was just a small amount of automobile manufacture, and those that were made were mostly at the high end of the market.

The Spanish bank Banco Urquijo founded SIAT (‘Sociedad Ibérica de Automóviles de Turismo) in 1940, which gave birth to SEAT. The goal was to build Spain’s own mass-production automobile market, and it was supposed to be a private company, but Franco ordered INI to take over.

It sells automobiles, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), sedans, MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), and various business vehicles. Auto parts and accessories, car repair and restoration, insurance, maintenance, warranty services, and more are all available through the service.

SEAT S.A.’s headquarters are in Martorell, near Barcelona, within the company’s industrial complex. In 2020, annual production exceeded 468,000 units, with over 427,000 cars sold in a single year and exported to more than 75 countries around the world.

In 1984, SEAT launched the Ibiza. It was a Giugiaro-designed hatchback with Fiat Ritmo underpinnings. It also made use of Porsche’s System engines. The Malaga, a four-door saloon, was born as a result of this. SEAT began expanding outside of Spain about this time, in 1985, and into other markets, including the United Kingdom.
